Over the decades Rolex produced a wide range of dials featuring custom logos, coats of arms, and military insignia. A particular focus was placed on the Arab market. It is believed that these so-called “logo dials” originally began as special commissions for select and highly valued clients.

Among the most recognizable motifs is the coat of arms of Saudi Arabia, better known as the “Saudi Swords.” The crossed swords symbolize strength and justice, while the palm tree represents vitality, growth, and prosperity.

Today, we are taking a closer look at a Rolex Datejust Ref. 16220 dating back to 2000. A Datejust for those who find a standard example just a little too ordinary.

The Ref. 16220 combines a classic 36 mm stainless-steel case with an engine-turned stainless-steel bezel. Inside beats Rolex’s reliable Calibre 3135, featuring the practical quickset date function.

What truly sets this particular example apart is its silver dial, featuring the iconic “Saudi Swords” crest positioned above the 6 o’clock marker. This distinctive detail makes the watch stand out clearly from a conventional Datejust.

The watch is completed by a stainless-steel Jubilee bracelet and sapphire crystal, characteristic of this generation of Datejust.

An exceptional Datejust with a fascinating historical connection, a rare special-order dial, and just the right amount of attitude to make it anything but an ordinary Rolex.
